Our Programs

Camp Susan Curtis 2021 Season: In line with the guidance of the State of Maine and our accrediting body, the American Camp Association, we got the green light to open and are planning to ramp up to 75% capacity, building on our safe and successful summer last year.

Programming:  More than 18,000 Maine youth between the ages of 8 and 18 have benefited from the summer programming at Camp Susan Curtis since it opened in 1974.  Today we offer four sessions of two week co-ed residential camp for a total of around 500 campers per summer.  We provide traditional camp experiences for 4th through 7th graders, a variety of special ‘bridge programs’ for early teens, and a comprehensive leadership development program for older teen campers. Campers are invited from every county in Maine (2018 CSC Geographic Report), and are referred directly by school counselors.  Campers must demonstrate financial need by qualifying for free or reduced lunch through the USDA school lunch program.  They receive full scholarships, calculated to be $1300 per camper per two week session.  The Susan Curtis Foundation works year-round raising funds to provide a life-changing experience for these youth.  We are developing ways to stay connected and offer opportunities to campers and their families throughout the year.


Guided by compassionate role models and focusing on character building, healthy lifestyles, recreation, and socialization; campers are immersed in experiential learning delivered through an engaging, inquiry-based curriculum. CSC youth develop the habits and skills for lifelong achievement with 100% of long –term campers who complete leadership development graduating from high school and 83% enrolling in post secondary study.

Traditional Camp Program (entering 4th-7th)

Same-grade campers live together as a cabin family and participate in personally selected activities in Program Areas including arts, environment, sports, team-building, and waterfront. Campers participate in 2 days of team-building and 6 days of skill-building classes including a swim lesson. Character Development, Healthy Lifestyles, Literacy, and Financial Responsibility are part of camp curriculum. Camp-wide activities include campfires and theme day with a unique weekend program.

stART & SLICE (entering 8th-9th)

stART Success Through Art: campers create high-quality Visual Arts while developing interests and showcasing talents at the end of the session. SLICE campers participate in service learning projects and volunteerism while building leadership skills and community awareness.

Explore, OWLS & Sports Leadership (entering 8th-9th)

Explore and Outdoor Wilderness Leadership Skills campers participate in adventure activities and practice Outdoor Living & Leave No Trace skills while exploring the Maine outdoors. Sports Leadership campers strengthen basic athletic skills while building leadership qualities on and off the field and court.

Leadership Development Program

Leadership Development (entering 10th-12th)

LIT & Leaders: As youth transition from camper to staff, they build leadership competencies and develop workforce skills while making meaningful contributions to camp culture in a progressive and supportive experience. College and Career goals and aspirations are interwoven with all activities.

Staff Apprentice

Staff Apprentice is the final level of the program requiring an application and interview. Designed to enhance life-long leadership skills through experiential learning in an emotionally and physically safe camp setting during a four week program.


Bowdoin Visit - CSC Camp to Campus and Career Trip

Camp Susan Curtis has extended programming, available to former and current campers. The programs encourage them to navigate the path which begins with high school graduation, higher education, and career aspirations by using habits and skills learned at camp – collaboration, communication, motivation to achieve, decision making, critical thinking, and beyond. Participants in year round programming will gain valuable information and resources with:

• Job site visits
• Valuable information panels

• Taking the Accuplacer and other testing
• Choosing a major/career path
