An Evening With Maine Authors VII
Join us at the beautiful Stone Mountain Arts Center for our 7th Annual Evening with Maine Authors to benefit Camp Susan Curtis!
The evening will begin with a cocktail hour followed by a wonderful buffet dinner in the Maine Concert Hall. After dinner, a current CSC Staff Member will share reflections about their camp experience followed by the evening’s feature presentation of readings by authors Kathy Gunst, Debra Spark, and Ron Currie.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Susan Curtis, a non-profit organization that provides enriching 10-day overnight summer camp experiences to Maine children facing economic hardship. Provided at no cost to campers, this remarkable camp helps children build self-confidence, feel a sense of belonging, and recognize their own potential.
In recognition of the fact that a significant number of Maine children facing economic hardship also struggle with food insecurity, readings from each of the evening’s authors will draw from Breaking Bread, a collection of essays focused on food, hunger, and family. Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to combat hunger and food insecurity in Maine.
Author Bios:
Kathy Gunst is a James Beard Award- winnning journalist and author of 16 cookbooks. Her most recent book is Rage Baking—the Transformative Power of Flour, Fury, and Women’s Voices. She is the Resident Chef for NPR’s Here and Now, heard on 550 stations and writes for the Washington Post, Eating Well, Yankee and other publications.
Debra Spark is the author of six works of fiction and two books about fiction writing, a professor at Colby College, and co-editor of Breaking Bread, a collection of essays by top New England literary talents and food writers. Her next novel, Discipline, is due out next year.
Ron Currie is the author of four novels. His work has won the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award, the Addison M. Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Alex Award from the American Library Association, and the Pushcart Prize. As a screenwriter he worked most recently on the Apple TV+ series EXTRAPOLATIONS and has developed projects with AMC Studios, Amblin Television, and ITV America. His next novel, the first in a trilogy about a Franco-American family in central Maine, will be published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in 2025.
