Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo, in honor of the campers at Maine’s Camp Susan Curtis, has posted to the web a message to kids everywhere of hope and reflection.
March 31, 2020 Portland, Maine. The Susan L. Curtis Foundation today announced that it has been awarded a two-year grant from United Way of York County totaling $5,000. This investment will support Camp Susan Curtis’s Health and Service Learning Programming for 2020 for York County children served by Camp Susan Curtis every summer.
At Camp Susan Curtis, we help mitigate the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and effects of toxic stress through the powerful forces of place, people, and possibility: • CSC offers a safe, serene outdoor environment for campers. Research proves that time spent in ‘green-space’ and ‘blue-space’ enhances mental, emotional, and social health (MESH) and provides documented physical health benefits. In addition, the residential camp environment facilitates development of relationship building skills that help children and youth create and maintain positive connections with peers, with adults, and within their communities; when combined with CSC’s character development for all participants and ‘Service Learning in the Camp Environment’ program for older campers, children and teens learn that they ‘have a place in this world’, in the words of one CSC camper, and understand how to use what they’ve learned at CSC to give back in positive ways.
Through the mobilization of people, resources and expertise, United Way of York County works to improve lives across York County. Thanks to the continued support of dedicated individuals, businesses, and organizations across the region, this year the United Way is investing in 63 community programs that serve children, youth, adults, and families.
“Each year we are very proud to invest financial and in-kind resources into high quality direct services that support York County residents and that align with our strategic priority areas,” noted United Way of York County President & CEO Barb Wentworth. “Those areas include providing the best start for our youngest children, increasing access to healthy foods for children and seniors, engaging youth in meaningful service, and meeting basic needs – all critical components of our collective efforts to build an even stronger York County.”
